Finding the Perfect Buck
A buck will make up 50% of your herd’s qualities, so the quality of your buck is important. When I bred horses, the breeder of my head stallion insisted that bloodlines are extremely important. He’d say, ‘blood always tells’… and it does. Genetics are a complicated study, but in a nutshell I have found that daughters tend to favor their sires, and sons tend to favor their dams. Not always, but a lot. Considering that the dairy goat breeder’s goal is to have more doelings per kidding versus bucklings, here the buck’s importance again comes heavily into play. Sound advise is to take a look at the buck’s dam and his sire’s dam. That’s not always possible, but if you study the pedigree you can get an educated idea of the milking worthiness of the buck’s dam and his sire’s dam.
